Rules of the Road by Joan Bauer is about Mrs. Gladstone is the elderly, crusty president of a chain of shoe stores. Jenna is a gangly, gutsy 16-year-old who sells shoes after school. When Jenna drives Mrs. Gladstone on a cross-country "road trip" to visit several shops in the chain, the two learn a great deal from each other.
